2014 Fund of the Year

28 November 2014 - Immediate release

SelectingSuper has named HOSTPLUS as 2014 Fund of the Year at this month's Selecting Super Awards held in Melbourne.

HESTA was named MySuper Product of the Year.

REST Industry Super won the Long-Term Performance award and Energy Super was voted the best super fund by consumers as it won the Consumer Choice award.

Super IQ, meanwhile, was named self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF) Administrator of the Year.

First State Super was named Workplace Value Choice Product of the Year, UniSuper was named Workplace Deluxe Choice Product of the Year, and IOOF Employer Super was named Workplace Premium Choice Product of the Year.

Equip Personal was named Personal Value Choice Product of the Year, legal super Personal was named Personal Deluxe Choice Product of the Year, and OneAnswer Frontier Personal was named Personal Premium Choice Product of the Year.

Energy Super Income Stream was named Retirement Value Choice Product of the Year, HOSTPLUS Pension was named Retirement Deluxe Choice Product of the Year, and CFS FirstChoice Pension was named Retirement Premium Choice Product of the Year.

Anne-Marie Corboy was the recipient of the Industry Services Award for her long standing commitment to superannuation social equity and boosting superannuation access and availability especially among women fund members. Corboy is chief executive of the HESTA super fund which was the 2013 Fund of the Year as well as this year's MySuper Product of the Year.

HOSTPLUS chief executive David Elia said he was "over the moon" that his fund had won the top award. "It's a real honour, and a great vindication of the strategic direction that the fund's been pursuing. But more importantly, it means a lot for the staff that their hard work has been recognized by the broader industry."

He said there was no silver bullet behind the success of the fund, saying the key was doing what was in the interest of members and taking a "common sense approach."

Accepting her industry service award, Anne-Marie Corboy said she was "very pleased and honored to be recognised in this way". Reflecting on her career in superannuation, she talked about the importance of redressing equity imbalances, particularly with regard to gender.

"When I started my career as a school teacher I had a choice between the State Superannuation Fund and the Married Women's Fund. And that's because when you got married in the public sector, you were excluded from the superannuation scheme if you were a woman," she said.

Corboy, who will step down as HESTA chief executive in February 2015, said in the next stage of her career she will be focusing on improving the standing of women's sport, expanding on her current role as a director of Netball Australia.

"Watch out, the sporting world," she said.

Christopher Page, managing director of Rainmaker Information the research partner of SelectingSuper, said, "award winners in 2014 being a mix of large funds, mid size and small funds, not-for-profit and retail and bank-owned super funds shows how competitive the superannuation market is now following extensive regulatory reform and high levels of innovation across the superannuation sector."

"If consumers can see past the headlines they'll see a large number of super funds working very hard to win their confidence. With innovation sweeping across the superannuation sector like never before, consumers are now in the box seat," added Page.

SelectingSuper is a superannuation research and information service. Through its partner Rainmaker Information, it has been monitoring super funds in Australia since 1992.

SelectingSuper publishes a wide range of information freely on its websites, tablet apps and corporate directories, including performance tables and other research, a learning centre and a technical library.
