What is lost super?

Does this sound like you?
  • You used to work for an employer in Australia and you do not know which super fund your employer paid your super contributions into?
  • You’ve forgotten which super fund you were once a member of even though you are sure your employer used to pay money into it on your behalf?
  • You have not had any contact with your fund for at least two years, whether to pay contributions, receive benefits or even just to let them know you are still around?

If so then you may have some lost super. And if you have some lost superannuation money you probably want it back, or to have it sent to your favourite super fund that you use now.
To do this you just need to take the first steps in finding it. But don’t despair. These steps are easy and may involve nothing more than just getting someone else to find it for you. You can even ask your current super fund or the Australian Taxation Office to help you.
Need to get motivated? There is around $8 billion held by the Australian Taxation Office that comes from around 5 million lost super accounts. That's an average lost amount of $1,600.
Go on, see if any of that lost super is yours. What have you got to lose?

How do you find your lost super?
Finding your lost super is easy. There are four main ways to do it:

  1. Conduct your own online search using the Australian Taxation Office’s SuperSeeker online service.
When using SuperSeeker you’ll need to provide your name, date of birth, and tax file number (TFN).
  2. Telephone the SuperSeeker call centre toll free on 13 28 65.
When calling SuperSeeker you’ll need to provide your name, date of birth, and TFN.
  3. Contact your current super fund and ask them to run a SuperMatch search for you.
SuperMatch is a special system designed by the Australian Taxation Office. Because it’s a little more sophisticated than SuperSeeker, and because it’s more sophisticated it requires some extra details even though you still only need to provide your name, date of birth, and TFN.
  4. Download the special Lost Members Enquiry Form and get the ATO to do the work for you.
